"The Fairy Dance"
Price: 7,500.00 AUD
Melbourne: 1920. Original painting by Ethel Spowers (born South Yarra 1890 - 1947), one of Australia's finest "fairy illustrators". A school of fantasy illustration emerged in Melbourne inspired by the work and commercial success of Ida Rentoul Outwaite in the first part of the 20th century. Spowers, along with Christian Yandell and Ethel Jackson Morris, was at the forefront of this coherent artistic Melbourne phenomenon. Spowers exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society and the Arts and Crafts Society. Aware of the growing school of contemporary fantasy illustration on the international scene, she drew on the influence of leading overseas artists including Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac. After studying with Claude Flight in London in 1929, Spowers created a great number of brilliant modernist linocuts, however, towards the end of her life, Spowers destroyed most of her work. This charming painting is a rare survivor. Examples of her original art are extremely difficult to find. Original watercolour, 200 x 206 mm, signed and dated 1920, mounted and framed.
