Engraved title vignettes. Ink name on title, thin splash mark on last leaf of second volume mirrored to title-leaf of third volume, short marginal tear in one leaf (no loss), spine shows creases from having been read, tiny worm hole in spine, otherwise a very good copy. "Nouvelle Edition, corrigée & augmentée" of the CONTES. The collected sketches Marmontel contributed to LE MERCURE DE FRANCE, notable for their polished style and their faithful depiction of French society during the reign of Louis XV. The first edition appeared the same year, pirated editions flourished, leading to the authorized, and celebrated, edition illustrated with plates after Gravelot published in 1765.
