London: Bunny & Gold, Shoe Lane, 1820. Numerous engraved plates, a number folding. 3 vols. 8vo. Fine Copy of a Sporting Classic. A handsome, wide-margined copy of this sporting classic, first published in 1801, covering a profusion of field sports, as well as game laws; it went into many editions. Although this book is generally assumed to deal almost exclusively with hunting and shooting, and indeed is famous for its various portraits and descriptions of sporting dogs, over forty percent of it is actually devoted to angling, with 18 angling plates and extensive discussion of varieties of fish and where to take them, hooks and tackle, weather considerations, fish ponds, and other relevant subjects of angling interest. The book's exquisite engravings have ensured this work its lasting popularity. Schwerdt I, pp. 133-4 Recased in later 3/4 tan calf over marbled boards, brown morocco spine labels, top edges sprinkled, others UNCUT, one plate repaired without loss, else fine; with the armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Blount, M.P. (1769-1843) in each volume.
