Single-page black and white wood engraving in COMPLETE Harper's Weekly magazine of March 5, 1870, image approximately 13 3/4 x 9 inches on sheet size 16 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. Soft horizontal crease, creasing at lower left corner, light overall toning and a few light spots in margin. Overall wear to the magazine including several pages with long tears (but not this image). An image after a painting by William Hunt of an African American boy seated and holding a slate. Other illustrated articles include The Sewers of Paris; Breach of Promise - How to Repair Broken Hearts; Japanese ladies; Rupert's Land (with 1/4 page illustration "Boundary Post Between the United States and Rupert's Land" - the page on which this appears has a long tear which does not affect this image).
