(London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1900), A FINE AND IMPORTANT WORK AND A CORNERSTONE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND THE STREAM-OF-CONSCIOUSNESS NOVEL. Sets are scarce now, and this is a very handsome example, with the bindings well designed and executed by Morrell. Sterne's unique work is considered the progenitor of the stream-of-consciousness novel. The word 'shandy', of obscure origin, means crack brained or half crazy. Tristram in Volume Four declares that he is writing a "civil, nonsensical, good humoured shandean book". Sterne parodies the novel form of his contemporaries and mocks the absurdity of development in narrative. 2 volumes. A finely printed and handsome edition. The first in this format including not only the principle novel, TRISTRAM SHANDY, but also A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY and three other shorter works. 8vo, bound in attractive antique three-quarter calf over marbled boards, the spines with raised bands gilt stopped and gilt ruled at the edges, compartments with elaborate gilt panels designs incorporating border and center tooling, each volume with two morocco lettering labels gilt, marbled end-leaves, t.e.g. viii, 368; (vi), 378 pp. A very handsome, very pleasing set. The bindings are very tasteful and the text-blocks are clean and easily read. In all respects, a very well preserved set with very little evidence of age or use.
