TEXT FOR DECEMBER, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS FOR SLAUGHTERING A PIG AND FOR CAPRICORN

Price: 4,000.00 USD

Northern France [probably Paris]: ca. 1460s. 130 x 98 mm. (5 1/8 x 3 7/8"). This comes from a large fragment of a very appealing Book of Hours with especially charming borders containing human and zoological inhabitants. The labor of the month depicts a man in a white apron raising a cudgel over the head of a pig he is about to kill; verso showing Capricorn the Sea-Goat with his cornucopia-like lower half, looking rather out of place in a green meadow. Minor loss of gold around the Kalends, a couple of tiny marginal stains, otherwise excellent.
