Scratch (Original script for the 1971 play)

Price: 2,500.00 USD

New York: Theatre 28 Company, 1971. Rehearsal Draft script for the short-lived play, MacLeish's last work. Based on Stephen Vincent Benet's short story "The Devil and Daniel Webster." Though originally intended to feature Dylan's songs exclusively for the soundtrack (some of his classics from the 1960s, and four songs that had appeared on the 1970 album "New Morning"), Dylan and MacLeish were unable to reconcile the dark tone of the play with the lighter tone of Dylan's songs and amicably parted ways. This draft features several holograph notations, one of which indicates a Dylan song that was intended to be used during a scene. The play debuted at the St. James Theatre on May 6, 1971, ran for only four performances and closed on May 8, 1971. Blank yellow studio wrappers. Title page present, dated 1970, noted as REHEARSAL DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter MacLeish, story writer Stephen Vincent Benet, and songwriter Dylan. 91 leaves, mimeograph. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus bound with two gold screw brads.
