London: Methuen & Co, 1898. Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1] 2-295 [296: publisher's ad] + 40-page publisher's catalogue dated "April, 1898" inserted at rear, original dark blue cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, all edges untrimmed, list of "Methuen's Colonial Library" books printed on the endpapers. First edition, later Colonial issue with cancel title leaf. Collects five longish tales, of which the title story concerns an elderly female vampire who battens on a young woman. It was first serialized in CORNHILL MAGAZINE in 1884. Baring-Gould, a scholar of antiquities, was well acquainted with the vampire motif and he makes good use of it here, well before DRACULA (1897). Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 51. Wolff 270a. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963), or Reginald (1979; 1992). Some foxing to endpapers, a very good copy with clean and bright binding. An uncommon book. (#152494)
