His Last Bow. Some Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes
DOYLE, [Sir] Arthur Conan (1859-1930)
Price: 147.50 GBP
London: John Murray. 1917, FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. v, 305 . In publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board. In new matching red cloth jacket with matching gilt titles to spine. A well-handled copy with guttering of front end papers slightly split. Spine faded to a peach colour; gilt to spine dulled. Sundry marks to boards. Internally clean, though end papers browned. Fair, but looking very presentable with new jacket. Includes the title story, which appeared in 'The Strand' magazine in September 1917 with the subtitle 'Some War Experiences of Sherlock Holmes'; the covers bearing the tag-line 'Sherlock Holmes Outwits a German Spy'. Unlike most Holmes adventures the narration is in the third person rather than recounted by Dr. John Watson and the episode focuses on espionage and intrigue rather than mystery and detection. Due to its portrayal of British and German spies and its patriotic themes, the story is widely believed to have been conceived as a morale booster for the troops. Green & Gibson [A40a].
