The War Speeches of the Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill, First Series: May 14th to July 14th, 1940

Price: 350.00 USD

Bombay: H.W. Smith at The Times of India Press, 1940. Most collectors know about the popular wartime Churchill speech pamphlets, such the HMSO pamphlet bearing "The Few" speech of August 20th, 1940. These are readily available and reasonably common, even if expensive. However, many other wartime Churchill speech pamphlets were produced, some of which are far more scarce and hardly ever seen. This is one such pamphlet. It is a small collection of Churchill speeches published in Bombay during the Second World War by Times of India. There were three such pamphlets - a "First Series" featuring speeches spanning May 14th to July 14th 1940, a "Second Series" with speeches spanning August 20th to November 21st 1940, and a "Third Series" featuring speeches spanning February 9th to August 24th, 1941. Here is the First Series. On most of the few occasions we have seen this pamphlet offered, it has either lacked, or sustained serious damage to, the covers. Here it is complete, with the original covers intact. This pamphlet is not only scarce thus, but also bibliographically significant as it is the first volume appearance of Churchill's House of Commons speech of 25 June 1940 regarding the fall of France. The speeches herein appeared later in Into Battle, the first of Churchill's seven war speeches volumes. The pamphlet is bound in glossy paper pictorial wraps, wire stitched, 48 pages in length, and measures 7.125 inches tall by 4.75 inches wide. Condition is almost very good, particularly given the pamphlet's age, fragility, and wartime colonial origins. Both original binding staples are firmly intact with minimal corrosion. Both the front and rear wraps remain attached, though there is a 2.75 inch split at the upper spine. The illustrated front wrap shows fractional chipping and tiny closed tears to the fore and top edge, with some modest overall staining and soiling and a hand corrected price of "5" over the original "3" Annas price at the lower left. The rear cover is complete apart from a small loss along the hinge an inch below the spine head, with moderate spotting, soiling, and a few tiny closed tears. The contents remain bright, with spotting confined to the page edges and the lower right corner of the title page, which also shows a little creasing. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A130, Woods D(a)7(a). First Edition, only printing.
