GILLETTE, William Hooker (1853-1937)
Price: 325.00 GBP
1902, Single sheet of plain paper dated February 11th, 1902. Hand written note to Squire Bancroft and Effie Wilton, Lady Bancroft, declining a luncheon invitation due to a previous commitment. Written when Gillette was performing 'Sherlock Holmes' at the Lyceum theatre which he had written in collaboration with Arthur Conan Doyle. Gillette was responsible for the introduction of the curved Briar pipe smoked by Holmes as it made the delivery of his lines easier. He also coined the phrase "Oh, this is elementary, my dear fellow" and reinforced Holmes' sporting of a deerstalker hat, originally drawn by Sydney Paget in the Strand magazine. Squire and Lady Bancroft, themselves noted actors were at this time running the Haymarket Theatre.
