[BULWER-] LYTTON, Edward George Earle, Lord Lytton (1803-1873)
Price: 4,650.00 USD
New York: Fredk. A. Stokes C, 1905. First American Edition, the rare first separate book publication of this "classic, perhaps the best haunted-house story ever written." (Sullivan) Small, slim 8vo: 57,[3 blank, advertisement, blank]pp. Original chromolithographed wrappers, flat spine lettered in black, back panel blank, housed in folding black cloth portfolio. Ownership label of Chicago bibliophile Larry Solomon on portfolio paste down, manuscript ex libris of Mildred W. Wilson (presumably, the southern writer, 1918-2013) on title page. A superb survival: very light wear to bottom edges, never affecting lettering or design; small corner loss on pp. 55-56, not affecting text; slight overall toning; pages clean and bright without foxing, browning or marks. Christensen, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, p. 176. Sullivan, p. 63. Clute and Grant, p. 249. Bleiler (Checklist), p. 34. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature II, pp. 698-700. ¶ First published in Blackwood`s Magazine, in 1859, then in book form, in vol. 10 of Tales from Blackwood, The Haunted has since been widely anthologized and remains a classic of the genre. Our copy conforms to the text of the longer-form story, not the usual abbreviated version, commonly reprinted as "The House and the Brain," which "lacks both coherence and conclusion." (Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature II, pp. 698-700) Clute and Grant refer to the longer version as "an archetypal Victorian haunted-dwelling story . . . remarkably effective in its creation of atmosphere." Sullivan traces its direct influence from Ralph Adams Cram's "No. 252 Rue M. le Prince" (1895) to Richard Matheson's Hell House (1971). "Whatever the fate of his novels, this tale will keep Bulwer-Lytton's name alive." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition.
