Cambridge MA: Harvard University Press, 1956. Warmly INSCRIBED on ffep "To President Wallace Sterling, Upholder of the Stanford Tradition. Albert Guerard." Octavo; xv, 222pp. First Edition in original 1/4 cloth patterned paper covered boards. A Very Good copy lacking dust jacket. From the library of Dr. Sterling (Two months after 200 student demonstrators occupied the Old Student Union Building on the Palo Alto campus in May of 1968, someone broke into Sterling's office, sprinkled gasoline on his desk and set the room ablaze. Before firemen could extinguish the fire, many treasured books, notes, manuscripts and the memorablia of a 30-year career were in ashes). Apparently this volume survived with no damage except for faint evidence of smoke! Guerard received his doctorate from Stanford in 1938; he taught at Harvard from 1938 to 1961 and moved to Staford in 1961, succeeding Yvor Winters in the literature chair named after his father, Albert Leon Guerard, also a professor at Stanford for many years. He remained at Stanford until 1985. In 1998, Guerard received an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. 1st.
