Reports To The Directors and The Workers, April 18, 1851 - Dec. 16, 1852.

Price: 200.00 USD

London: Price's Patent Candle Co, 1852. 8vo. 148 pp. J.P. Wilson and G.F. Wilson were the owners of this company. This copy is signed George F. Wilson, one of the owners of the company. The reports exhibit a blend of Christian behavior with enlightened concerns for the welfare of the employees many of whom were children. From the text it canbe determined that this was one of the most progressive businesses going. Page 123 contains an excerpt from a letter of Harriet Beecher Stowe praising the treatment of employees and wishing that such practices existed in the United States. There is no formal title page as this is a series of reports bound together. I assume that the reports had limited circulation and indeed this particular set belonged to one of the directors who in turn wrote several of the pieces here. Letters of commendation came from many sourcesiincluding the headmaster who wrote Tom Brown's School Days who himself changed the treatment of school boys. Altogether an early example of concern for workers rights. Included is a 2 page handwritten document about this book from a previous heir of the Wilson family. internally fine, binding shows scuffing.
