Winston Churchill, His Life in Pictures

Price: 90.00 USD

London: Sagall Press, Ltd, 1945. This is the first and limited edition of a profusely illustrated book chronicling the life of Winston S. Churchill through the end of his role as wartime Prime Minister. Zoller calls this book "one of the better photo-documentaries". The contents are indeed a trove of captioned photographs spanning Churchill's life through his first premiership, with captions by Ben Tucker, Foreword by Lord Kemsley, and Introduction by Sir Cuthbert Headlam. This copy is in very good minus condition, its most significant flaw being a forward lean. The buff cloth binding featuring a line drawing of the Prime Minister is quite clean considering the light cloth's susceptibility to soiling, with only minor soiling most prevalent on the rear cover. The contents, printed on heavy coated paper, are clean and free of ownership markings or spotting. The book was published in July 1945, a momentous month for Churchill and Britain. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. He would be relegated to Leader of the Opposition for more than six years until the October 1951 General Election, when Churchill's Conservatives outpaced Labour, returning Churchill to 10 Downing Street for his second and final premiership.
