An important German woodcut book of the Renaissance, the first Egenolff edition of the German translation of Petrarca's De remediis utriusque fortunae. Prefaced in verse and edited by Sebastian Brant, translated by Stephan Vigilius and the distichs at the head of each chapter were written by Johannes Pinicianus. The 260 splendid woodcuts were created by the so-called "Petrarca-master" Hans Weiditz, who was commissioned by printers of Augsburg for the first German edition of the book in 1532. Some of the woodcuts also appeared in different Cicero translation printed in Augsburg until the blocks were eventually purchased by Egenolff, the publisher of the present edition, who used them in at least four editions. They were later passed from one Frankfurt printer to another, appearing in several further editions until the beginning of the 17th century.
