London: John Stockdale, 1793. London, John Stockdale, 1793. Quarto, [ii] (engraved title leaf with vignette, verso blank), [xvi], 583, (blank) pages plus a frontispiece portrait, 5 maps and charts (two of them large folding maps), and 10 engraved plates with tissue guards (from artwork 'Drawn on the Spot by Captains Hunter, & Bradley, Lieutenant Dawes, & Governor King'). Antique-style full simulated calf with gilt rules on the boards, the spine gilt-decorated in compartments, with a contrasting title-label (basically, it's brown vinyl, with the stamp of Dove Bindery); title leaf trimmed close at bottom edge, just shaving the descenders of the date (as often); several light stains to the edges, resulting in light tidemarks to the top corners of the first 370 pages (and to a lesser extent the bottom corner of the last 350 pages), and the plates and maps therein (with light inoffensive stains near the centre of the folding maps when they are opened out); occasional light foxing (heavier on the plates); bottom corner tip of the last 30 leaves creased, with slight loss to one corner and a small sealed tear to another; two old minor repairs to inner margins (using paper); minute amount of marginal worming to the last three plates, their tissue-guards and the accompanying leaves of text (the first of these plates is bound in upside-down, clearly as issued, and the last leaf is a little creased, with a few leading edge chips and creases); trifling light marks to a handful of leaves; minimal signs of use and age; overall a decent copy. The journal of John Hunter, second Governor of New South Wales, and an important source for the early European settlement of Australia. Plates include the first published illustration of the new settlement ('View of the Settlement on Sydney Cove', after a sketch by the author), and 'A Family of New South Wales', engraved by William Blake after a drawing by Philip Gidley King. Ferguson 152; Wantrup 13. First Edition. Fair.
