The celebrated Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, known for his geometric bronze works, was born in 1926 in Morciano di Romagna, a commune in Rimini Province about 120 km south-east of Bologna. He worked in Milan, where he currently lives. His brother was also a sculptor. Arnaldo Pomodoro studied stage design and goldsmithing, before settling in Milan where he met the Argentinian sculptor Lucio Fontana and other avant-garde artists. Pomodoro turned to producing sculptures, which range from monumental outdoor works commissioned for outdoor sites to small, hand-held pieces. Four cast bronze works by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Forme del Mito, deriving from the story of Agamemnon in Greek mythology, were shown in Expo 88 in Brisbane in 1988, and were subsequently acquired for the city. In 2018, the year of Expo's 30th anniversary, they have been restored and are in a prominent position at the top of Edward Street in Brisbane's CBD. Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, commander of Greek forces in the Trojan War and husband of Clytemnestra, was murdered in some versions of the myth by Clytemnestra's lover Aegisthus; Cassandra, daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy, is represented by the sculpture 'The Prophet'. Pomodoro's sculptural group recounts the tale under the titles 'The Prophet', 'The Machine', 'Ambition' and 'Power'. Arnaldo Pomodoro's major exhibition venues include Venice, Rome, Milan, Turin, Cologne, Spoleto, Florence, Munich, Paris, Budapest, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Berkeley, Montreal, Brazil, and his sculptures are widely held in international Collections. As new.
