Wells writes to aeronautical engineer and philosopher John William Dunne (1874-1949). He was also a family friend of Wells, who encouraged him to design and test models of tailless plane. Wells writes, "My dear Dunne, Very glad of your news and very grateful for the 'elephant gun' instructions. I will rearrange my artillery in the book. Good luck to your experiments, Yours ever, H.G. Wells". In the lower portion, Wells draws an amusing sketch of an airplane that looks a bit like Dunne's tailless biplane but with a person on a seat holding onto a pole, unprotected. A figure on the ground holds a huge elephant gun aimed at the aeronaut. Wells offered a caption, "...picture conjured by Dunne of an aeronaut attacked by infuriated elephant gunner."
