Overall, a tight and fresh copy. First published in 1871, The Playground of Europe is a collection of essays by English author and mountaineer Leslie Stephen. One of the earliest members of the Alpine Club (the first mountaineering club), Stephen was renowned for his climbs in the Alps, which he discusses in these essays. In addition to providing detailed accounts of the author's historic climbs, this text provides insight into the earliest years of organized mountaineering and is therefore an important historical source on the sport. Notably, Leslie Stephen was the father of Bloomsbury Group members Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. Near Fine. Near Fine.
