"Meditations on Rene Char" in: RENE CHAR'S POETRY: STUDIES
Price: 85.00 USD
Rome, Italy: Editions de Luca [Noonday Press, distributor?], 1956. First Edition. Softcover. An early prose essay in a small book of 7 pieces about Char (1907-1988) who many considered the greatest living French writer. He was close friends with Albert Camus, Georges Bataille, Maurice Blanchot, and, oddly, Martin Heidegger later in life. Camus and Blanchot each contribute pieces along with four lesser known but prestigious French authors. Wright's piece precedes his first book THE GREEN WALL, giving a hint of his later increasing interest in European poetry. Laid into the book is a review slip from the Noonday Press giving a publication date of May 27 (assume 1957 as the book itself indicates it was printed in Rome in December 1956) and was the Amercan distributor of this anthology (although Noonday is nowhere mentioned in the text of the book itself). A most interesting publication and a scarce secondary Wright appearance. The dj flap prints prices in British, American, and French currency. Wrappers glued int printed card cocerss with integral flaps. Scarce and in unusually nice condition. First Edition. Some light browning to the pages, which are mostly uncut, otherwise a fine, obviously unread copy.
