Moscow: Knigoizdatel'stvo "Zhizn' i znanie", 1918. First Edition. Octavo (20.8 14.1 cm). Original printed wrappers; 80 pp. Partly erased private owner signature to front wrapper; old Soviet bookstore mark inside rear wrapper; else very good or better. First edition of Lenin's study of the agrarian question in late nineteenth-century Russia. In late 1917 and early 1918, the Bolsheviks were widely disseminating Lenin's demands for complete nationalization of the land, which gained broad support among the Russian peasants for the Bolshevik cause. This copy most likely from the collection of Sigizmund Natanovich Valk (1887-1975), the Vilnius-born Soviet historian and scholar of the Russian revolutionary movement. In 1918-1927, he served as the head of the Revolutionary History Archive in St. Petersburg and was one of the founders of Soviet historiography, publishing numerous key works throughout his life. The bulk of his collection is today housed at the Russian Academy of Sciences. This title not in the Souvarine and Bernshtein catalog (Dekker & Nordemann BV, 1980). Scarce, with KVK, OCLC showing copies at Chicago, Hoover, UNC Chapel Hill, and University of Toronto.
